Five fall tree care tips Utah homeowners should know about

Fall foliage is beautiful—but did you know the fallen leaves are adding valuable nutrients back to the tree, even while they’re on the ground?

Now that fall has arrived, here are few important notes for homeowners in Salt Lake, Park City, and the Cottonwoods. The bottom line: there’s a lot more to fall tree care than raking. (And you might be raking wrong, too!) These five tips are some of the most important ways you can set your trees up for a healthy, resilient winter season.

  • Keep watering deeply, once every 10-14 days through late fall. Well hydrated root systems survive Utah winters better than dehydrated roots.

  • Don’t rake the fallen leaves under your trees! Raking your lawn is fine, but your tree needs the nutrients and moisture stored in those leaves.

  • Go light on pruning before winter. Only remove the limbs that are dead, diseased, or damaged.

  • In Park City and the East Bench of Salt Lake, add structural support to columnar trees. Branches are at risk of breaking under heavy snow. Wrapping them with burlap or twine can help. (Columnar trees are the tall, narrow ones often used as borders or for privacy.
